If you are a Windows user, there is a good chance you would have experienced some sort of virus or trojan infecting your computer at some point of time (Lucky you in case you haven’t). Although the first choice is always antivirus softwares such as BitDefender Free Antivirus, Avast Antivirus, Kaspersky Antivirus etc but there are times where the installed software is outdated or not working, in those cases, its worthwhile to consider alternatives such as online virus scanners.
Make no mistake, these virus scanners in no way can replace your firewalls, anti spywares, anti malwares or anti viruses, they are just there to complement them. Now lets have a look at the most popular and recommended free online virus scanners:
VirusTotal is one of the most popular online virus scanner where you can upload the file you want to check for virus. VirusTotal allows a maximum file size of 64 MB. Upon uploading, VirusTotal scans the file via 40 various anti virus and anti malware programs. VirusTotal also allows you to scan a web URL so you can know if that particular URL is free from malicious content or not. Handy, isn’t it?
2. BitDefender QuickScan
BitDefender QuickScan supports most browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. BitDefender requires you to install an addon or an extension before scanning. Unlike some virus scanners which require you to download heavy files and then scan your system thereby taking anywhere between 30 mins to an hour, BitDefender Free Online Virus Scanner hardly takes under a minute to complete by using cloud technology.
Note - BitDefender QuickScan only detects the active malwares or trojans. Inactive viruses or malwares are not scanned.
3. TrendMicro HouseCall
Trend Micro’s HouseCall is a browser independent online virus scanner which means you can use it from any web browser. HouseCall offers a variety of scan options namely Quick Scan, Full Scan and Custom Scan. Quick Scan scans the critical areas of the system which are commonly infected thereby reducing the scan time. Custom Scan allows you to select which specific areas of the system you wish to scan. HouseCall offers 2 versions to choose from – 32 bit and 64 bit so its recommended that you check which OS you are using before downloading either.
Although Trend Micro HouseCall is a terrific product, only downside of this product is its scanning time. The Full Scan can take as long as 2 hours.
VirScan is a lot similar to VirusTotal which checks for virus and malware infection using almost 30 antivirus engines. The max limit for file upload here is 20 MB.
5. F Secure Online Scanner
Hope you enjoyed the list. If you have any better suggestion which I missed, do mention it in comments.
